SEO Copywriting vs. SEO Translation: What Does Your Content Actually Need?
Do you need brand-new content written, or existing content translated? Here's the real difference between SEO copywriting and SEO translation.
SEO Copywriting vs. SEO Translation: What Does Your Content Actually Need?
When a business needs web content that also ranks on Google, it's easy to confuse two services that solve different problems: SEO copywriting and SEO translation. Both aim for the same outcome — content that gets found and converts — but they start from completely different points. Here's which one you actually need, depending on your situation.
SEO copywriting: creating new content from scratch
Copywriting is the strategic writing of original content, built from the ground up around a specific goal: selling, generating leads, explaining a service clearly. When approached with SEO in mind, it's also structured around the keywords your audience actually searches for, with a layout designed for both the reader and the search engine.
When you need it: when you're starting from a blank page — a new landing page, a product page that doesn't exist yet, a blog you want to launch. There's no prior text to translate or adapt: it's built from scratch, with the keyword and conversion goal as the starting point.
SEO translation: adapting content that already exists (and already works)
SEO translation starts with content that already exists and is already optimized in one language, and translates it into another language while preserving (or recovering) its ability to rank — which means not just translating the text, but re-researching keywords in the target language, as covered in our article on multilingual SEO.
When you need it: when you already have content that performs well in one language (a website, a blog, product pages) and want to bring it to another market without losing the SEO traction you've already built with the original.
The common trap: using translation when you need copywriting (and vice versa)
Literally translating copy that was never built for SEO
If the original text was never optimized for search engines, translating it "as is" simply carries the same lack of optimization into a new language. In these cases, before translating, it's worth considering whether it makes more sense to rewrite with an SEO copywriting approach directly in the target language.
Writing new content from scratch when you already had something that worked
Conversely, if you already have content that ranks well and converts in your original language, it doesn't always make sense to "reinvent" it in another language from a blank page — you lose the already-validated optimization work. In these cases, it's usually more efficient to translate and re-optimize SEO on top of that proven foundation, rather than starting over.
How to decide which one you need
| Question | If the answer is yes... |
|---|---|
| Does a reference text that already performs well exist? | SEO translation — adapt and re-optimize that content in the new language |
| Are you starting from a blank page, with no prior content? | SEO copywriting — original writing from scratch |
| Was the original text never built with SEO in mind? | SEO copywriting — better to rewrite with a conversion-focused approach than translate unoptimized text |
| Are you aiming for consistency with content already published in another language? | SEO translation — maintains brand and message consistency across languages |
Both share the same goal: content that gets found and sells
SEO copywriting and SEO translation both aim for the same outcome — it's not enough for content to be well written, it has to be built around the words your potential customer actually uses to search for what you offer. The only difference is the starting point: a blank page, or existing content to adapt.
