7 Translation Mistakes That Can Damage Your Company's Reputation
A translation mistake can cost you more than money — it can cost you your customers' trust. Here are the 7 most common ones, and how to avoid them.
7 Translation Mistakes That Can Damage Your Company's Reputation
A translation mistake is rarely just a language problem. In most cases, it's a trust problem: a customer reading an ambiguous contract, a website that sounds unprofessional, or a confusing product page doesn't think "that's a poor translation" — they think "this company doesn't care about the details." Here are the mistakes I see most often, and how to avoid them.
1. Translating idioms and expressions literally
Translating a colloquial expression or idiom word for word almost never works: what sounds natural in one language can sound absurd or simply incomprehensible in another. A human translator interprets the meaning and finds the natural equivalent in the target language, instead of converting each word individually.
2. Not adapting tone to cultural context
A warm, informal tone can work perfectly in one market and come across as unprofessional in another. Copying the same register across every language without adjusting it to the cultural expectations of the reader is one of the most frequent mistakes in translating marketing content.
3. Using machine translation without human review on sensitive content
Machine translation has improved a lot, but it still doesn't grasp legal, medical, or brand nuance the way an experienced person does. Publishing a machine-translated contract, technical spec sheet, or medical text without review means taking on a risk that, if it goes wrong, can lead to disputes, misunderstandings, or even safety issues. The fix isn't discarding machine translation — it's pairing it with expert review, known as post-editing.
4. Inconsistent terminology within the same document or project
When the same term gets translated differently throughout a document, website, or catalog, it signals carelessness and can create real confusion about whether the same thing is being referred to. A consistent glossary of terms, maintained throughout the project, prevents this — especially important in lengthy technical documentation.
5. Ignoring the legal context of the destination country
A contract or commercial term needs more than linguistic accuracy: legal terms that work in one country may not have an exact equivalent in another legal system. Translating without accounting for that difference can leave clauses ambiguous or, worse, without real legal standing in the destination country.
6. Not reviewing the final result with fresh eyes
Even a good translation benefits from an independent final review before publishing — a second set of eyes catches errors that the person who did the translating, after hours in the same text, no longer notices. Skipping this proofreading step is one of the easiest mistakes to avoid, and yet one of the most common due to rush or budget cuts.
7. Treating translation as the last step instead of part of the process
When translation gets left until the very end, right before something is published or sent out, there's no room left to do it properly: no time to research terminology, no time for proper review, no time to resolve questions about context. Planning translation as part of the process — not as the last item before launch — is the difference between a professional result and a rushed one.
How to avoid all of this: the general rule
Most of these mistakes share a common cause: treating translation as a mechanical task rather than a professional process that requires human judgment, time, and review. Working with someone specifically trained in translation — not just bilingual — and allowing enough time to review the final result dramatically reduces the risk of any of these seven mistakes reaching your customers.
